The Winter Olympics have been taking place in Sochi, Russia. For Britain, Lizzy Yarnold has won the gold medal in skeleton; there is the first ever medal for Britain on the snow as Jenny Jones gets bronze in slopestyle; Britain get silver & bronze in curling. Overall it is Britain's joint best performance ever.
The very wet winter in England and Wales continues, affecting many areas, with perhaps the most badly affected area being Somerset. Over 300 flood warnings have been in force in the UK as the river Thames reaches its highest level in years and there is the "most exceptional rain for 200 yrs". This has caused a large number of houses to be flooded. It has all been caused by a series of storms during the winter.

Independence for Scotland
There is some uncertainty over the future of Scotland in advance of the referendum on independence in September. It is suggested by both the government and the opposition political parties that if Scotland breaks away from the union with England it can’t keep the pound, although Scottish Nationalist Party (SNP) leader Alex Salmond suggests it can.
In Ukraine, there has been violence in the streets of Kiev in protest against the president. Anti-government demonstrators occupied buildings in the centre of Kiev, and riots left 98 dead and thousands injured during 18–20 February. There were also violent protests on 22nd February, when the Ukrainian government voted to remove the president.
Radio DJ Dave Lee Travis and TV actor William Roache have both been found not guilty of sexual offences. Several public figures have been on trial since offences committed by Sir Jimmy Savile became known.

The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, has sent Russian troops into Ukraine, deposing Ukrainian soldiers and navy, despite warnings from many other countries. Ukraine was a part of Russia until 1991. In the part of Ukraine called Crimea, the people voted to leave Ukraine and join Russia, which Russia has welcomed.
A Malaysian Airlines aeroplane has gone missing near Vietnam. Flight MH370 was flying from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia to Beijing in China but has vanished without a trace. The authorities cannot say what has happened to the aeroplane or the passengers on board, of which there were over 200. It is believed, however, that the aeroplane went down into the Indian Ocean, reason unknown, and that there are no survivors. Families of the passengers have been angry at the lack of information.
Court trial of famous athlete
The runner Oscar Pistorius, of South Africa, is on trial over the killing of his girlfriend. He is charged with murder. Oscar Pistorius is the most famous Paralympian in the world – although he is disabled, he runs using special blades, and is perhaps the only disabled athlete to compete in the Olympic Games for able-bodied athletes.
Following the recent Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, the Paralympics were held at the same location. Great Britain won its first ever Winter Paralympic gold in a skiing event. Overall, Russia came top of the medals table, and Great Britain finished in 10th position with 1 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze. However, the political crisis between Russia and Ukraine was a distraction with Russia having negative publicity. The motto for the Games was the same as for the Olympics last month – “Hot. Cool. Yours”

Ebola treatment unit in West Africa.
A disease called ebola has killed around five thousand of people so far in West Africa and has left many families devastated. The symptoms are similar to flu but the disease kills a high proportion of the people who get it, especially if they are not treated. Other countries have sent money and also nurses and doctors to help treat those who are ill. There has also been a small number of cases (fewer than 10) in Europe, the US and Australia, among people who have visited west Africa and have flown home.
War in Afghanistan
The last British troops who were fighting in Afghanistan have returned home. Over the 13 years that they were there, 453 British soldiers were killed. The reason for the war was to fight terrorists who have threatened people in Western countries and who oppress people in their own countries.
This is an organisation which wishes to impose strict Islamic rule in many countries and is regarded as a terrorist organisation by the West. It has been active in countries such as Iraq and Syria and has been murdering hostages from the West, posting images of the murders on the Internet. It has also killed large numbers of Muslims.
The European Union has asked Britain for £1.7 billion extra for its budget. However, the British government initially refused to pay, and subsequently agreed a reduction. The timing was not good as many people in Britain feel that the European Union is costing Britain a lot of money and presiding over too many laws; indeed many people have called for Britain to leave the EU.
Racing car driver seriously injured
The Formula 1 racing car driver Jules Bianchi has undergone surgery after being critically injured at the race in Japan when his car came off the track.
Controversy surrounding footballer
The footballer Ched Evans has been released from jail after serving 2½ years for raping a 19-year-old girl. He has been allowed to re-train with his former football club, Sheffield United. However, this has caused a lot of controversy with many people protesting that someone who has been convicted of rape should not be allowed to return to his former career. Other people have said that he has served his sentence, and Ched Evans himself has always protested that he was innocent.
There have been protests in Hong Kong against the oppressive nature of the Chinese government; the people of Hong Kong wish to see more democracy. The disabled athlete Oscar Pistorius has been jailed for the manslaughter of his girlfriend. Also, tax discs are no longer required to be displayed in the windows of cars in the UK as checks on the payment of tax can be made using computer systems.

This year marks 100 years since the start of World War I. As a result, the annual act of remembering soldiers who have died in past wars has been enhanced. At the Tower of London, an enormous display of hundreds of thousands of poppies was made. These were artificial poppies, each one of them representing one of the soldiers who was killed in World War I.
Band Aid 30
The Irish singer Bob Geldof has organised a large group of singers to record a song, the sales from which will help people in West Africa suffering from ebola. He first did this in 1984, that is 30 years ago, to help people suffering from famine in Ethiopia – the group was called Band Aid and the song was called “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”. This year, he has organised a re-recording of the song, with the group now being named Band Aid 30. The song was the best-selling song in its first week of release.
There has been rioting in Ferguson, Missouri, USA, over a decision made by a court that a policeman who killed a black teenager was not guilty of wrongdoing. The teenager was killed in the summer, and many people in the black community believe that the teenager was treated differently because of being black. There have also been protests and unrest in some other American cities, causing the USA president (who is also black) to appeal for calm.
This is a phenomenon which in the past was unknown in the UK, but has now arrived here from America. On Black Friday, people are able to buy items at a reduced price. However, there were violent scenes in shops as some people fought with each other, and although a lot of purchases were made on Black Friday it had mixed views in hindsight.
New laws for parts of UK
Following the ‘no’ result in the Scotland independence referendum in September, the British government has announced more powers for Scotland, for example control over its income tax policy. In the future, there may also be more powers for towns in the north of England.
Criticism of World Cup report
The World Cup is a tournament between all countries of the world in the game of football. A report has appeared on the process for choosing the host countries for football World Cups in 2018 and 2022. However, even the person who wrote the report has criticised the way it has been publicised. Football’s governing body, FIFA, has been criticised in the past as many people believe that bribery was involved in the decisions to award these future World Cups to Russia and Qatar.
A probe has landed on a comet for the first time, having set off from Earth in 2004. The Australian cricketer Philip Hughes was killed after being hit on the head by a cricket ball during a training session. He was aged 25. In football, Sheffield United is not allowing Ched Evans, who is guilty of rape, to re-train with them, although before it had allowed him.
Once again, November was a warmer month than average in Britain. It was also wetter than normal.
